ex tower captain at Minster Abbey on Sheppey
18-03-1927 to 05-09-2010

It is with regret that I have to report the death of Joan on 5th September aged 83.

Although I do not know whether she rang many peals or quarter peals, we know she rang her first quarter in 1948. Joan preferred to keep the Abbey bells ringing; a truly loyal village ringer who enjoyed ringing, whether it was rounds and call changes or plain courses or touches of various methods. I am certain that people appreciated the effort she put into ringing at the Abbey. Joan was Tower Captain from 1957 to 1968 and really enjoyed it. She had been a member of the Kent C.A. since 1944.

When I became Tower Captain Joan helped me train new members and was still a very keen on ringing till ill health meant that she could not climb the stairs to the ringing room. Although she was keen on ringing, help in the community was important to her; being a brownie leader, a member of the PCC, etc. Finally I can only say I was honoured and pleased to know Joan.

Her ashes were interred on 22nd September and local ringers got together to ring touches of Grandsire and Plain Bob on open bells to celebrate and give thanks for her life; no doubt Joan would have preferred this. Those who rang were Roger Durrant, Paul Everest, Derek Gowdy, Stephen Haynes, Val Reckless and Stephen Trafford.
