Great Malvern Priory, Consistory Court Judgment

On Monday, 9th March we heard the news that, following a consistory court hearing, the Chancellor of the Diocese of Worcester, Charles Mynors, has declined to grant a faculty for the replacement of the bell frame at Great Malvern Priory. This is a highly controversial decision and many ringers who have been following this case closely over the last seven years will, no doubt, regard it as being a ludicrous one. The decision could set a worrying precedent and we hope that Great Malvern Church will now consider taking the case to appeal at the Court of Arches. The conservation in situ of a poorly designed bell frame – of no great antiquity, interest or intrinsic historical importance – should not be allowed to stand in the way of the preservation and development of the living heritage of ringing.
