Valerie Weston

1946 - 2012

Val, was not a prolific ringer but one of those unsung heroes who supported ringing at her home tower of Radcliffe on Trent and that of the Southwell Guild for some 30 years. Val’s roots were in Surrey where her brother Barrie rang at Walton-on-Thames but it was not until moving to Ashby de la Zouche that she learnt to ring. Still a novice, Val moved to Radcliffe in 1983 and rang her first quarter peal at St Mary’s in 1984, treble to Bob Major. Like most activities in her life she would not attempt anything unless doing it properly being modest of her capabilities. Many might wish to emulate her "modest" progress to ringing quarters of Cambridge, Yorkshire, Superlative and Rutland Surprise, Double Norwich, Stedman and Grandsire Caters. Val never rang a peal – too long to stand she said. Her last quarter peal was to be for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on 3rd June.

A bank manager by profession, Val’s other great love was guiding and she formed a group locally and went on through many roles to be District Commissioner. Val also found time to be a magistrate and to pursue painting and embroidery both of which displayed yet more of her hidden talents.

In August 2012, Val had a resurgence of the cancer for which she had had a previous operation, this time it progressed quickly and she passed peacefully on 27th September. A memorial service was held in Radcliffe church on 16th October following a cremation at Wilford Hill, Nottingham. The church was packed with ringers, guiders and churchgoers and the bells were rung half-muffled before and after the service. Addresses were given by the Vicar Revd Graeme Anderson, Dee Miles for the Guides, Chris Mew on behalf of ringers and with Psalm 23 read by her nephew, William Weston. The service concluded fittingly with the guides end of day song "Day is done, gone the sun" accompanied by handbells. Our sympathies go out to brother Barrie and family.
