1916 - 2013

Charlie Bell left school at the age of 14 and became Assistant Golf Professional at Davenport Golf Club, Stockport until he joined the British Transport Police in 1936. He retired as a Detective Sergeant in 1973. He then joined Greater Manchester Police working in the Criminal Record Office until he fully retired in 1981.

Charlie was elected a member of the National Guild of Police Ringers over 50 years ago and served as President of the Guild from 1977 to 1980. He was also a ringer at St George’s, Stockport for over 50 years, being Tower Captain for approximately 15 years. He was a stalwart member of the Police Guild and later, a Life Member travelling all over the country to attend meetings. I have many happy memories of travelling with him to some of those meetings when his beloved late wife, Rhoda, supplied us with enough sandwiches and goodies to feed an army (not withstanding that we were always well fed and watered at the meetings)!

His son, John (also a proficient Cheshire ringer) emigrated to France with his family to be joined later by Charlie and Rhoda 10 years ago. They had a wonderful life in France and he kept in regular touch with his friends and Guild members back in the UK. Sadly, Rhoda died a few years ago but Charlie continued to enjoy reasonable health until he was admitted to a Nursing Home in France near to his family. John and his family regularly visited Charlie until he passed away peacefully on 26th January 2013. I remember telephoning Charlie at the Nursing Home where none of the staff spoke English! It was a good opportunity for me to practice my O Level French! (over 50 years ago). My valiant attempt of "Bonjour, je voudrai parlé avec Monsieur Bell, s’il vous plait", et c., et c.! to the staff eventually proved to be successful.

At the Police Guild Annual Quarter Peal Day, a quarter in thanksgiving for his life of at St Georges, Stockport sadly came to grief but a quarter at nearby Norbury was successful.
