24th March 1920 – 28th March 2013

Arthur John Stacey was a long serving member of the Oxford Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers having been elected in 1934. He learnt to ring at Padworth, Berkshire when he was thirteen or fourteen years of age and apart from ringing he also became a Churchwarden. In 1940 he went into the Royal Berkshire Regiment serving in Africa and Italy and was demobbed in 1947. He then returned to Padworth.

In 1959, with his wife and family, he moved to Thatcham and joined St Mary’s, Thatcham bell ringers. He rang his first quarter peal in November 1961 and his first peal in November 1962 of Plain Bob Triples inside. He continued ringing there until he was in his late eighties

The Funeral Service at St Mary’s, Thatcham was well attended by family, friends and bell ringers. Also in attendance was the Oxford Diocesan Guild Master who placed the Guild Banner in a prominent position at the front of the church. The service was conducted by the Revd Pat Jones. Half-muffled ringing took place before the service and a quarter peal was rung afterwards by a band consisting of present and past members of the tower. Another quarter peal was rung on 7th April of St Clement’s Caters and also the Tuesday peal band dedicated their peal of 5040 Argyll Surprise Royal on 16th April to Arthur’s memory.

Arthur was a kind and pleasant man, with a lovely smile and sparkling eyes who loved his family. He was a popular, regular attendee and committed bell ringer at Thatcham having rung there for over fifty years.

The band at Thatcham will miss him. May he rest in peace.
