Thomas Benjamin Dickinson

1939 - 2013

Ben Dickinson was one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. He was born in Crewkerne, Somerset and learnt to ring at the age of 15. However, his career as a chartered electrical engineer took him to the Middle and Far East curtailing his ringing for 40 years or so.

When he finally retired and moved to North Staffordshire he once again took up ringing and rang regularly for Sunday Service at Horton and Leek in Staffordshire. Until he was taken ill he never missed a Monday practice night at Bosley just over the border in Cheshire, always followed by the customary visit to the pub and appreciation of real ale! He also joined and never missed David Adam’s Mid Week Crisis Group.

With his superior knowledge of interactive technology he was able to produce any blue line (alongside his Stars and Satellite Apps!) at the drop of a hat, although ringing them proved a little more difficult for him! He was always willing to learn and rang his first peal when over the age of 70, followed by a further peal, both conducted by Duncan Hyde. His efforts were much admired by all who knew him and Duncan commented, “Ben always gave his all and had an almost childlike need to learn. He was very accepting of constructive criticism and seemed to delight in learning a new idea or concept, especially as his understanding seemed to occur in a series of epiphanies”. Ben proved beyond doubt that you are never too old to learn. A half muffled peal was rung at Horton with three local ringers in the band. A peal in his memory was also rung at Leek and several quarters were also rung by his many friends in the Mid Week Crisis Group. A Thanksgiving for the Life and Love of Ben was held at Horton Church which was full to capacity on 20th September 2013.

His many other interests included cookery, wine and beer making and model railways but first and foremost he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He cared lovingly for his wife Sue who has been wheelchair bound for the past few years.

May you rest in peace “OLD SON”.
