Monica Blagrove

Around 200 people attended the funeral of Monica Blagrove, and associated ringing events, on Tuesday, 12th November, following Monica’s death, aged 78, at home on 25th October. The funeral took place at noon at St Andrew’s Church, Clewer, Windsor, where Monica learned to ring and rang her first peal (for the Oxford Diocesan Guild) in 1951. Following the short service many ringers in the congregation took the opportunity to ring a farewell to Monica on the recently restored ring of six bells at this church, and a buffet lunch and refreshments were made available by the Clewer ringers.

From 2pm there was general ringing on the eight bells of Windsor Parish Church (St John’s), again with light refreshments available, followed by a quarter peal of Grandsire Triples by members of the Middlesex Association (details below).

From 7pm there was half-muffled ringing at Old Windsor as a farewell to Monica. This is where, sixty years ago, Monica asked Frank to take her to a dance, and where the couple’s close and loving relationship began.

It was also sixty years ago, in May 1953, that Monica became a member of the Middlesex Association by ringing a peal at Horton. In total Monica rang 434 peals (423 of them with Frank) being 328 for the Middlesex Association, 97 for the ODG and 9 for other societies. 280 of her peals were at Windsor (St John) where her last Association peal was one of Plain Bob Major in December 2008 and where Monica is second (after Frank) on the peal ringers’ ‘leader board’. This was followed by just one more peal, of Doubles, at Clewer in 2009 for the ODG. Monica also rang five peals (again second only to Frank) on the challenging bells in the Curfew Tower at Windsor Castle where Monica was the first lady to ring a peal. Overall Monica rang peals at 37 towers and ranging from doubles to Caters, but none of these statistics tell of Monica’s high levels of striking accuracy, and consistent (trip-free) performance that 392 people have experienced.
