Helen Watts

1969 - 2014

Helen Watts, the Loughborough District Secretary, sadly passed away on 13th September 2014 at the age of 45.

Helen started ringing handbells whilst still at school in Lincoln and went on to learn to ring at St Giles Church in Lincoln. Helen moved to Loughborough in 1990 with her partner and started ringing at Wymeswold. In 2007 she joined the ringers at All Saints’ Loughborough, but still rang regularly at Wymeswold. Helen became a member of the Leicester Diocesan Guild in 2009. She served on the Loughborough District Committee for a number of years before taking on the position of Secretary in December 2013.

Helen started to feel unwell around May this year. In July she was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately the cancer was too advanced to treat and she moved to LOROS at the beginning of August where she passed away on 13th September. Helen did not have any family living close by, but throughout her illness the ringers from Loughborough and Wymeswold were with her.

There were very few days when a ringer was not popping in before work, spending their afternoon with her, or speeding down the A6 to see her at the end of the day. She was always interested in what was going on up the tower, down the pub, and in the district. She was involved throughout. We held a district committee meeting one evening at LOROS; we also arranged an outing for her to meet up with many of the Loughborough and Wymeswold ringers – we rang at Anstey and then in traditional style we took her to the pub. She contributed to the funny moments, the banter and shared our ringing achievements. Her sense of humour shone through to the very end.

The Loughborough and Wymeswold ringers, and the Loughborough District committee will miss her enormously. Our hearts go out to her family at this very sad time.
