Mary Rouse

1927 - 2014

Mary was born Dorothea Mary Drew to a farming family in Cromhall; and learned to ring in the mid 40s. By 1947 she was Branch Secretary of the Wotton-under-Edge Branch and also Tower Secretary of Cromhall. She rang her first peal in 1949 of Grandsire Doubles at Cromhall on the new six and the following year she rang her first peal of Grandsire Triples; that same year she rang a peal at Cromhall with Charles Rouse who she married in 1959. They set up house in Brookfield Road, Churchdown and Mary taught at Innsworth School until she retired. Initially, Badgeworth was their local tower but they joined the Churchdown band sometime later and the Gloucester Branch always had a lovely tea when the branch meeting was held there. In 1971 Mary became an associate member of the Gloucester Branch, having had to give up tower bell ringing through health problems, although she still rang handbells with Les Barry. Both she and Charlie were made HLMs of the Association in 1977.
