Brian Hugh Coatsworth

1940 - 2014

Brian was one of the first of the “new testament” young ringers at Putney, one of several taught by Tony Clayton. Brian had been born in Egypt and then lived in South Africa returning to England in 1946. He was brought up in Putney and attended St Mary’s Putney being in the choir with Andrew Wilby and, like many, graduated from choir to bell ringing.

Although he didn’t keep records, Brian rang many quarter peals and to my knowledge some 25 peals. His first was Grandsire Triples at Putney for Princess Margaret’s wedding in May 1960 conducted by F. E. (Ted) Collins. He went on to ring peals of Stedman, Double Norwich, Surprise Major and Bob Royal and Grandsire Caters. Brian was tower captain at Kingston on Thames in 1961 and later at Horsell from 1976 to 1979.

Brian met Pat Randall from Norwich, and they were married in 1967 at Thorpe St Andrew. They were blessed with a son Adrian, living in Horsell and later in Pyrford. Brian shared a passion for sailing with his son which continued over the years and took over from ringing although Brian would still make a guest appearance on outings. Latterly Brian took up bowling and sailing his own-made model yachts. Brian worked for Surrey County Council and also the Magistrates service.

After a long fight against cancer, Brian died on 22nd October and prior to a cremation, a service of thanksgiving was held at St Mary’s Horsell on 5th November. The church was packed with the many whose lives he had touched and his son Adrian gave a moving address. A quarter peal of Grandsire Doubles was rung immediately after the service in his memory.

Brian was a quiet and unassuming person with all his life centred on his family. Our condolences go to his wife Pat and son Adrian and wife Julia.
