Ivor Bentley

Ivor Bentley of Oadby in Leicestershire, died on 14th December, after a short illness. Having learnt to ring in the Manchester area, and after studying engineering at Manchester, he came to Oadby in the 1960s. He and his wife, Miriam, who died several years ago, were regular members of the congregation, particularly at evensong, throughout their time in Oadby, and Ivor served the church in many capacities, including membership of the PCC and, most notably, as Chair of the Church Fabric Committee.

Ivor’s bellringing activities were mainly confined to Oadby, where he was an absolute stalwart for around 50 years: he rarely missed either service ringing or practice nights, and could always be relied on for any special ringing at the tower, until his failing health forced him to stop during the autumn. He rang around 150 quarters and 5 peals at Oadby, but most of all Ivor served the church by ringing to call people to worship.

Many local ringers joined Ivor’s friends, including many from the St Peter’s congregation, for his funeral, held at the church on Tuesday, 23rd December, and local ringers rang after the service, as the congregation left the church. In the evening a quarter peal was rung on the bells as a tribute to Ivor’s life and contribution to the life of St Peter’s. Several

Oadby ringers, who were unable to ring in the quarter peal, also wish to be associated with it: Gwen Tyler, John Hill, Mary Hill, Jo Green, Steph Fallows.
