1939 - 2011

Peter Barnett, Tower Captain of Longburton, near Sherborne in Dorset, died on September 2nd 2011 after a short illness. He became captain of a band of complete beginners in 1989 when the tower of St James the Great had only four bells that had been silent for 14 years. The church soon enjoyed service ringing once more and, due to his initiative, funds were raised for two additional bells that were installed in 1992. A two-page article on the augmentation was published in The Ringing World No.4231, May 29th 1992.

He was a good leader and teacher and will be much missed in the tower and in the village. In his memory, a peal was rung at Longburton on September 19th (see p.1041) and a quarter peal at Iwerne Minster on 28th September (p.1093).
