Lloyd McCreadie

1923 - 2011

A perfect gentleman

It is difficult to catalogue in a few paragraphs the life and times of a remarkable, but by the same token modest person.

Lloyd was born in Maperton in 1923. When he was eight years old he joined the church choir. A few years later, aged thirteen, he learnt to ring. This was to be a life-long love of his. Also his devotion to his church was such that he served as Churchwarden for sixty years. This in itself was a truly remarkable achievement.

In 1960 Lloyd was elected Cary Branch Secretary; a post he held until 1985 (his tenure as Branch Secretary is still more than the current total of his three successors). In 1990 he was elected Cary Branch Chairman; a post he held until his death. He had a wonderful way of conducting meetings making certain that they were not unnecessarily ‘lengthy or strung out’. Fittingly, in 1983, he was elected an Honorary Life Member of the Bath & Wells Diocesan Association.

Lloyd spent his working life with an engineering company in his local town of Sherborne and often during his time there he was offered promotion which he always declined.

In 1953 he met Margaret, and in 1954 they were married at Maperton Church and shared fifty-seven very happy years together, producing three delightful children. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, making certain at all times that the happiness and stability of the family was paramount.

At his funeral and interment, Maperton Church was packed to capacity. This is testament to the huge affection in which he was held. The Exercise and the Cary Branch will be poorer for his passing.

We offer Margaret his wife and daughters Mary Sheila and Clare our heartfelt sympathy in their loss. We also rejoice in a good, decent, caring, courteous, and above all kind life, long life lived in full to the very end.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
